of the 176th Session 1996-97

The Hubble Space Telescope and the Evolution of Galaxies

Prof Malcolm Longair
President of the Royal Astronomical Society
Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy, Cavendish Laboratory,
University of Cambridge
and formerly Astronomer Royal for Scotland

at the Royal Museum of Scotland, Chambers Street, Edinburgh on Monday 7th October 1996, at 7pm.

Observations with the Hubble Space Telescope have revealed new aspects of the formatio and evolution of galaxies. Professor Longair will discuss the current state of cosmological understanding and the role of these exciting new observations in astrophysics. The lecture will be profusely illustrated by recent Hubble Space telescope images as well as by computer simulations and animations.
