Inventions used to be an expensive and risky business. The Society of Arts was established in the 1820s by the eminent scientist David Brewster (himself the inventor of the instantly popular Kaleidoscope), with the aim of securing the rights of Scottish inventors. Dr Simpson uses that Society's Archives to explore the politics behind Brewster's handling of some of the first inventions to be submitted to the Society.
