Professor Arnold Maran, a head and neck cancer surgeon, reveals the secrets of the human voice.
The singing voice is one of the greatest gifts that humans possess, and forms an integral part of the world we live in. Songs are everywhere and, whether you love opera, rock, pop, country and western or the big band sound, all rely on the power of the human voice to communicate their message.
Professor Maran is a former President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and has worked with and operated on well known singers from all genres during his career.
Arnold Maran was Professor of Ear, Nose and Throat surgery in Edinburgh after trailing around various other spots. He retired from surgery in 1997 and spent his last 3 years as President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. He is married with two of a family (an anaesthetist and a dentist) and as yet none of the six grandchildren have a job! He was a classical pianist who crossed the divide and played jazz for many years in the less succesful Edinburgh pubs. He knows nothing about singing but worked with a genius who wrote much of the software used to measure the voice today all over the world. He is better at golf than singing and now hopes to be a famous author now that he is old; The Three Mafias is published on 6 March 2008.
